Welcome back to the 45th season of hockey in St. Clair Shores. My son, Colin, started playing hockey in the SCSHA when he was a Squirt. He’s beginning first year of law school at Wayne State University this fall. My daughter, Caitlin, is playing on the girls’ 15U team this year. It’s amazing how things change. One thing that HAS NOT changed has been the SCS boardroom. It has had the look and feel of a poorly remodeled basement, or of an up North bar. I have always contended that the room only needed a few well placed deer heads to look complete.
Hold on Hockeytown! The boardroom is getting a make over. Board members Sal Giacalone, Tad Ruggeri, and John Grzelak are spearheading a total room renovation. Most of the labor and materials are being donated through various sources cultivated by the trio of decorators. Coach Paul MacPhee is donating drywall and his services. Parents’ Club Vice-President, Matt Garby, has donated his services to paint the room. Look for a bright, updated look for the start of the season.
To get the room ready for renovations, we had to clear our years of accumulated debris. You’d never believe some of the things that were found . . . which leads me to my Top 10 list for the year.

Removing Registered Players before Draft
If your house player made a travel team outside of St. Clair Shores, if your family is moving, or if your player just decides not to play hockey, you must notify the registrar, Mike Blum, to remove your player from the draft. Please call Mike @ 791-1616 by September 1st. The SCSHA has a new refund policy this season. There will be NO REGISTRATION REFUNDS, even if you notify Mike before the drafts. The no refund policy was CLEARLY stated on all registration forms EARLIER this year. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
News from the MAHA Convention
The Michigan Amateur Hockey Association held its annual summer convention at Sault St. Marie’s Kewadin Casino and Convention Center from July 12-14. The SCSHA was represented by Sal Giacalone and Debby Connor. There were several hot topics Those with the biggest sizzle were the elimination of Mite travel hockey AND not allowing independent teams to compete at the district and state levels. In the end, Mite travel hockey was eliminated in Michigan. Independent teams will still be allowed to compete at the same levels as association based teams.
Sal was also the facilitator of the association president’s meeting. He further took on duties as MAHA’s sergeant at arms. He helped maintain order in the usually chaotic general meeting. Sal garnered some information about a coaching development work shop run by Mo Mantha at Ann Arbor’s Olympic Development Training Center. He would like to see some of our Shores coaches participate this season. Debby attended the Women’s & Girls’ hockey round table meeting on behalf of the SCSHA
Both Sal and Debby had a great time at the convention. They were proud to be representing SCSHA at the meeting. It was great to see old friends and renew once a year acquaintances.
Used Hockey Equipment Sale
The Parents’ Club will be holding its annual USED EQUIPMENT SALE on Saturday, August 17 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Items can be brought in for resale from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 15 and Friday, August 16. The terms of the sale are cash only and no items will be accepted on the day of the sale. Treasurers’ Meeting Scheduled
Jim Rini, SCSHA Treasurer, will be conducting his team treasurers’ meeting on Thursday, Sept. 12. The travel treasurers’ meeting will be at 7:00 p.m, followed by the house treasurers’ meeting at 8:00 p.m. The meetings will be in the SCSHA Board Room. All teams MUST be represented. Call Jim @ 468-0380 with questions.
It’s Managers’ Clinic Time Again
The 9th annual Managers’ Clinic will be held on Tuesday, September 17. Material for new managers will be discussed from 6:30 p.m.- 7:45 p.m. Information for both new and “seasoned” managers will begin at 8:00 p.m. Revised league guide books, first aide kits, Dollar Store Give Away, and “Ask MISTER Referee” with Greg White and Jim Hadad are just some of the planned events. It’s fun. It’s informational. AND it’s free.
Parents’ Club Meeting Slated
The first Parents’ Club meeting of the season is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Activity Room. All teams should be represented. The Parents’ Club sponsors many outstanding events throughout the season. The commitment is about 1 hour per month. Don’t let your team miss any of the exciting events and activities. Make sure to put the first meeting on your calendar. Anyone can attend - - not just your team rep. After September, the Club meets the second Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Board room.

Star Video & Signed Parent Pledge Card
In an effort to promote sportsmanship and positive parental behavior, District 3 (our district) & MAHA are requiring that each player’s parents view the STAR VIDEO. STAR, an acronym for “SHARED TOLERANCE & RESPECT”, is a taped effort to reduce negative parental behavior. It’s the same video that many of us saw last year, narrated by the effervescent, Mickey Redmond. Even if you saw it last year, you’ll have to watch it again, because you’ll have to sign a pledge card which indicates you’ve viewed the tape this season. Your division rep. will have details for each team early in the season.
As you watch this mini cinematic gem, listen to its straightforward intent. The message may be trite, but it’s true . . . It’s only a game.
